Sakti -A cancer diagnosis is life-altering in itself. But for patients in Central India, the challenge has often been compounded by limited access to advanced oncology centres closer home. For years, specialised cancer treatment, high-end surgical systems and technology-led care remained concentrated in leading metro hospitals and high-cost private healthcare institutions, forcing patients and their families to travel long distances while navigating unfamiliar hospitals, prolonged waiting periods, emotional strain and mounting financial burden.
That gap in access is now beginning to narrow. At Vedanta’s BALCO Medical Centre, advanced cancer care technologies and specialised surgical systems are becoming available within the region itself. Established as a 170-bed not-for-profit tertiary cancer hospital under the Vedanta Medical Research Foundation, BMC is bringing high-end clinical infrastructure, advanced operating theatres and integrated oncology care closer to the communities that need it most.
Over the past eight years, BMC has treated more than 67,000 patients, recorded over 4.4 lakh OPD visits, and conducted upwards of 12,500 cancer surgeries. In addition, thousands of individuals have been reached through outreach initiatives including mobile cancer detection and community awareness programmes, supporting earlier diagnosis and timely treatment.
At the core of BALCO Medical Centre’s care model is an integrated oncology ecosystem where medical, surgical and radiation oncology work in close coordination under one roof. By bringing multiple specialities together within a unified treatment framework, BMC enables seamless continuity of care and more coordinated clinical decision-making, particularly for patients requiring complex, multidisciplinary intervention. This integrated approach not only improves treatment planning and clinical outcomes, but also reduces delays, multiple referrals and the logistical burden on patients and their families during an already difficult journey.
As part of its continued investment in advanced cancer treatment, BMC has introduced the da Vinci Xi Robotic surgical system, bringing robotic assisted minimally invasive cancer surgery to the region for the first time. The system enables surgeons to perform complex procedures with enhanced accuracy, supported by high-definition 3D imaging and improved control. For patients, this translates into reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery.
To support the growing demand for specialised oncology procedures, the oncology centre houses six operation theatres (OTs) as part of its surgical infrastructure. All OTs are advanced modular facilities built to international standards, equipped with HEPA-filtered airflow, precision-controlled environments, and integrated digital systems that support safe and high-quality surgical outcomes.
Highlighting the significance of these developments, Dr. Bhawna Sirohi, Medical Director, Vedanta Medical Research Foundation, said, “This is an important step in establishing BMC as a centre of excellence for cancer care. We are inspired by leading global institutions and are committed to bringing the highest standards of care to this part of the world. With the introduction of robotic surgery and the addition of a sixth operation theatre, BMC has state-of-the-art surgical infrastructure to manage complex cancer cases. We also see this as an opportunity to work closely with institutions and clinicians across the region to share knowledge and build capacity in advanced surgical techniques. Training the next generation of oncologists will be critical to improving cancer care delivery for Chhattisgarh state and the country.”
Alongside its clinical advancements, BMC has also commissioned a solar power system as part of its efforts towards environmentally responsible and sustainable healthcare delivery.
For patients and families, these advancements represent far more than expanded hospital infrastructure. Access to advanced cancer care closer to home can significantly improve timely diagnosis, continuity of treatment and adherence to care, while reducing the emotional and financial strain associated with long-distance travel. Through integrated oncology care, advanced surgical technologies and continued infrastructure expansion, BALCO Medical Centre is helping redefine the availability of high-quality cancer treatment beyond India’s metropolitan centres.
